The International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Faster Labor Contracts Act on June 9.
The legislation addresses a critical challenge facing newly organized workers by helping ensure that employees who exercise their right to form a union can reach a first collective bargaining agreement in a timely manner. Too often, employers delay negotiations after a successful organizing campaign, weakening worker support and undermining the collective bargaining process.
The IUEC is especially encouraged by the bipartisan support demonstrated in the House vote. Twenty Republican members joined House Democrats in supporting the legislation, helping advance an important measure that strengthens workers’ rights and supports collective bargaining.
The IUEC also recognizes and appreciates the unanimous support of House Democrats who voted in favor of the legislation. Advancing the rights of working people requires champions from both sides of the aisle who understand the importance of collective bargaining and fair labor practices.

Despite House leadership’s resistance, Representative Norcross, a member of the IBEW from New Jersey, was able to push a “discharge petition” that had been signed by 211 House Dems and 7 House Republicans. The discharge petition signors can be found here: Office of the Clerk, U.S. House of Representatives – Discharge Petition Details – 19 .
The Faster Labor Contracts Act now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration. If enacted into law, it will provide important protections for workers seeking to secure their first union contract and strengthen the collective bargaining process for generations to come.
