Safety is not a slogan. It is the foundation of our trade.

Every day, elevator constructors work in complex environments where focus, preparation, and accountability make all the difference. The IUEC Safety Stand Down is a dedicated time for every member, employer, and industry partner to pause normal operations and refocus on what matters most: making sure every mechanic goes home safe.

The 2026 Safety Stand Down reinforces our shared commitment to jobsite awareness, hazard prevention, and the responsibility we all carry to protect one another. It is an opportunity to step back, have the hard conversations, review best practices, and strengthen the safety culture that defines our industry.

Safety is not just a department. It is a mindset that must be present on every job, every shift, and every decision.

Safety Starts With Us

A successful Safety Stand Down is more than a single day. It is a reminder of the standards we carry forward year-round.

Take the time to evaluate your worksite. Ask questions. Address hazards. Support your coworkers. Follow procedures. Never assume.

Because the safest jobsites do not happen by accident, they happen when safety comes first.

Stand down. Speak up. Stay safe.

As part of the IUEC Safety Stand Down, we also recognize OSHA’s Fall Protection Campaign taking place May 5 through May 9. During this period, we ask Locals to support members and employers by conducting jobsite health and safety inspections focused on fall protection systems and equipment.

During your site visits, please ask members to inspect all fall protection equipment. All damaged or outdated personal fall arrest system (PFAS) equipment should be immediately removed from service. Please ensure equipment removals or replacements are properly logged, along with the number of members on each jobsite.

Once inspections are complete, please forward all jobsite visit information to Brother McClaskey and Brother Griefenhagen. This information will be compiled, tallied, and submitted as part of the final report to OSHA.

Participation & Resources

This year, we encourage all locals, members, and signatory contractors to participate by taking time to review site conditions, identify risks, reinforce proper procedures, and recommit to the standards that keep our workplaces safe.

Together, we continue building stronger jobsites, stronger partnerships, and a stronger union through safety.
